A Gozitan soldier has just completed a 10-week deployment with the United Nations interim force in Lebanon handling liaison and keeping communication lines open with the local political, military and religious leaders.

Captain Joseph Spiteri, 34,was deployed in Unifil’s Sector West Brigade headquarters where, among other things, he offered practical operational experience on civil military cooperation.

Capt. Spiteri’s deployment with the UN’s interim force in Lebanon was the second in the history of the Armed Forces of Malta, after a similar one took place in 2007.

He will shortly move to Brussels where he will serve as staff officer in the EU’s Crisis Management and Current Operations Branch.

His deployment in Lebanon was made possible through the close cooperation between the Maltese and Italian military.
