The police are investigating the death of a 72-year-old man in an accident involving another patient at the Gozo General Hospital’s mental health unit.

The elderly man suffered head injuries after he was apparently pushed

The elderly Gozitan patient suffered injuries to his head after he was apparently pushed by a woman also recovering in the same ward, sources said.

The accident in which the two, both residents in the Ta’ L-Ibraġġ section for people with mental health problems, were involved took place on Friday at about 6am, the police media unit confirmed.

The exact details of what happened could not be confirmed yesterday but sources said the police did not seem to be working on the theory that the two patients had been involved in an argument.

Instead, they were following the line that the woman pushed the man, albeit accidentally, who then fell to the floor unconscious.

The sources said the man was taken to his room and was then certified dead by a doctor who went to visit him.

Magistrate Josette Demicoli appointed a number of court experts to assist in the inquiry into the case.
