A Gozitan was yesterday charged with knifing a British man in Mistra Bay on Saturday during a fight which the police believe started in a car driven by the victim.

Franky Cini, 30, from Żebbuġ in Gozo, denied seriously injuring Dane Williams, holding him against his will, illegally carrying a knife and relapsing.

In the arraignment, which was over in a matter of minutes, Magistrate Claire Stafrace Zammit deferred the first sitting to this morning so that Mr Williams could testify.

Sitting in the public gallery, Mr Williams, wearing a blue hospital gown, had a scar across his forehead and limped out of the court room when he was told that he would be testifying the following day.

Defence lawyers Joe Giglio and Steve Tonna Lowell did not request bail.

Sources said the two men were in Mr Williams’s car on their way down to Paceville from Gozo, accompanied by another two friends, before the incident took place.
