Claire Caruana won the Sir Arturo Mercieca Award for the best Gozitan law student in constitutional law at the University of Malta.

The prize was offered by the grandchildren of Sir Arturo, a former Chief Justice, to mark the translation and publication of his autobiography, Le Mie Vicende, in Maltese, which was launched in Gozo earlier this year.

The award was presented by Gozo Minister Giovanna Debono who highlighted Sir Arturo’s contribution to the country for which he suffered and was even exiled. “Keeping alive the memory of such personalities is our duty,” Mrs Debono said.

Sir Arturo was born in Victoria in 1878 and had a long and distinguished career as a lawyer and politician culminating in his appointment as Chief Justice and president of the Court of Appeal.
