It is ironic that on the day Desmond Zammit Marmarà’s article, ‘Undermining government’, appeared there were also no fewer than two articles that could be said to undermine the government. Zammit Marmarà accused the Nationalist Party and its leader in particular of “obstructionism which only serves the purpose of undermining the legitimately-elected Labour government and goes against the national interest”.
On the front page was an article about Michael Falzon, the former parliamentary secretary, landing a new job with the Grand Harbour Regeneration Corporation, a state entity. Falzon’s job was apparently unadvertised.
Does Zammit Marmarà condone public entities giving jobs to the boys because that is what Falzon’s job seems to be? Had the job been adequately advertised maybe there could have been others who could have applied.
To add insult to injury, Falzon took it out on the paper when it contacted him to enquire about the veracity of his being given a job at the state entity.
The second article concerned the bank reference letter issued to Konrad Mizzi, which senior banking officials have deemed “odd”.
Unfortunately, Mizzi is em-broiled in the Panama Papers controversy. To me and to all right-thinking people it is absolutely unacceptable to have a senior minister involved in such an imbroglio.
All the good this government can do is outshone by the stench emanating from the imbroglio Mizzi is involved in.
So what does Zammit Marmarà expect the PN to do?
In my view, it is in the national interest that the party in Opposition should highlight this and other scandals the Labour government has been involved in: the Australia Hall scandal, the Cafe Premier scandal and the Gaffarena scandal.
Am I to assume Zammit Marmarà is happy with and willing to justify these scandals?
