On November 19 The Times reported that the Prime Minister had warned people “to be wary of Labour’s promises, because promises which undermine Malta’s competitiveness will undermine the future of jobs in this country”.

Can Lawrence Gonzi tell us what his government has done to cut waste, which also hurts Malta’s competitiveness? The waste I have in mind is, for instance, €23 million in consultancies by Austin Gatt and Tonio Fenech’s ministries, which have delivered only failed policies (such as Arriva).

Can Gonzi also tell us to what extent competitiveness is being hurt by the huge sums diverted to service Malta’s overwhelming €5,000 million debt? Gonzi ran up a lot of that debt. Labour leader Joseph Muscat has told us the government is spending more on servicing the national debt than on education, for instance.

The government usually rebuts Muscat’s claims when it wants to make a point. But it has not rebutted this one.
