Lyrics have always meant a lot to Cruz but, says vocalist Marilyn Mifsud, “Good on You is probably the most intimate, painfully autobiographical thing I’ve ever written.

“It explores the family cell, focusing on a father-daughter relationship… the way a daughter looks up to her father and how the core of that never changes.” At its heart, the song addresses the various changing elements that life brings over the years and the way these affect the relationship; it also unveils a fresh musical slant to Cruz’s sound.

Kicking in with a playful riff that mirrors its more recent musical experimentations, Good on You has an upbeat, funky sway that blends seamlessly into Cruz’s tried-and-tested pop-rock hybrid.

“The song,” says the band, “represents maturity in the sense of transcending the expected lyrical anger-driven material to taking the leap of faith, no longer hiding behind our instruments or music and becoming our work”.

Perhaps what stands out most in the song is the way its melodic drive, all crisp and upbeat, stills sits well with the song’s more serious lyrical aspect. To listen to Good on You and other music from Cruz, look up the band’s page on Facebook.
