For Lawrence Gonzi, the most important news of this electoral campaign is what Anġlu Farrugia told The Sunday Times. For him, the stories about the kickbacks on oil procurement and an alleged €350,000 donation to the Nationalist Party’s electoral campaign pale into insignificance compared to the non-stories recounted by Farrugia in his interview.

That Gonzi is in such a panic mode that he keeps looking for anything which he thinks may save him from political oblivion come March 9 is understandable. However, for him to believe that he has found his political lifeline in Farrugia – the same person that the PN had mostly used in its negative criticism of the Labour Party – proves that Gonzi’s political acumen has hit rockbottom.
