The second Golden Bay Sprint Triathlon took place in the surroundings of the Radisson Blu Resort Golden Sands, earlier this month.

The event mentors were David Cachia, Colours of Malta owner, Bernard Micallef, Josef Gafa, of Jugs Malta, Winston J. Zahra, of Island Caterers Ltd, and athletes Fabio Spiteri and Kevin Zammit.

Proceeds from the race, €4,850, were handed over to the Community Chest Fund at the end of the race.

In all, 110 athletes, local and foreign, took part in the sprint race which comprised a 750m swim, a 20km cycling segment and a 5km run. Seventy-three athletes took the challenge as individuals while the others formed part of relay teams.

The swim took participants twice round the marker buoy, set out in the beautiful waters of Golden Bay.

Following that, they ran up the 86 steps to transition area for the cycling portion of the race. The ride took them out to Xemxija outskirts and back for the final run at Hal-Ferh.

The men’s race was won by Omar Said. He was followed home by James Cuschieri and Kevin Muscat.

Celine Pace was the top woman triathlete on the day. Lorraine Xuereb was the runner-up ahead of Isabelle Caruana.

Be Hotel were the relay winners.

The team was composed of swimmer Ramon Calleja, cyclist Twanny Fenech and Edward Agius who ran the five-kilometre segment.
