Four local councils will become greener by having indigenous plants and trees in their localities.

The project is managed by the Environment Ministry, which signed a memorandum of understanding yesterday with Msida, Fgura, St Paul’s Bay and Victoria councils.

Environment Minister Leo Brincat said the pilot project was based on proposals by the councils and, eventually, should be applied to the rest of Malta and Gozo.

Each council will submit a status report to the authorities to monitor the project and spot checks will ensure contractual obligations are maintained.

The ministry will approve any changes to the contract and has the power to terminate it if conditions are breached.
