Goalline technology will go under the microscope in the humble surroundings of the Hampshire Senior Cup final between Eastleigh and Totton in southern England next month, FIFA said yesterday.

The governing body announced a series of tests will take place in live match action as well as under laboratory conditions in May and June with the game in England representing the first live trial.

Tests will be carried out by Hawk-Eye and GoalRef, the two companies nominated by the International Football Association Board (IFAB) in March to test their systems.

The May 16 fixture at St Mary’s Stadium in Southampton will be operated by Hawk-Eye.

A second fixture will be confirmed later.

GoalRef’s system will be tested in two separate matches – either two Danish league matches or one league fixture and a forthcoming international friendly match.

Results of the tests will be provided to the IFAB in order for a decision to be made on the use of goalline technology at their special meeting in Kiev on July 2.

All tests will be supervised by the EMPA (Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology) who will test both systems.
