The planning authority has given its go-ahead for the construction of a submarine power cable between Sicily and Malta and of a terminal station in Magħtab.

This means that as from next year, Enemalta will be in a position to start the process of shutting off and decommissioning the Marsa power station.

The €200 million project entails the excavation of a tunnel to pass cables from the terminal station to the Kappara distribution centre and a culvert to link the station to the shoreline at Qalet Marku bay.

The cable will be buried 1.5 metres below the seabed wherever possible. And it will be covered with cast iron shells or rocks in areas where the seagrass Posidonia oceanic grows.
