Maltese motorbike racer Simon Giordmaina was recently classified a creditable fourth in the Nitrolympx series which was held earlier this month in Hockenheim, Germany.

Giordmaina had long been preparing for this racing series with an intensive training pro-gramme conducted mainly at the Ħal Far Raceway.

In the build-up to the Nitrolympx, he had established the Maltese record in his category on four different occasions, hitting the best quarter-mile time of 7.72 seconds.

Giordmaina is an avid motor-cycling enthusiast, spending countless of hours in training and inside the pits as he is also heavily involved in assembling his own 500+ Turbo Suzuki Hayabusa, building and fine-tuning his engines and set-up.

In the Super Street Bike class in Hockenheim, Giordmaina clocked the first seven-second run of the event, a 7.88 that came with speeds of 300kph.

However, the weather turned nasty for the two other days of competition with heavy rains lashing down on the circuit forcing officials to cancel racing and base their final results on the first timed runs from Day One.

Giordmaina was fourth.

His next assignment outside Maltese shores will be next month’s European Finals at the mythical Santa Pod Raceway in England.

The Finals, starting on September 8, are the last round of the European Drag Racing Cham-pionship and features the largest race entry in the continent.

In fact, close to 300 teams and 16 race classes make this event unrivalled for both the quality and quantity of racing.

“Anything can happen, we need to keep our feet on the ground but I promise I’ll do my best to run a personal best, a 7.60 perhaps, at Santa Pod,” Giordmaina was quoted as saying after his exploits in Hockenheim.

“There’s a long list of people I would like to thank not least Richard Demicoli and Albert Muscat. There’s my wife and my brother who made the trip to Germany with me and my friends Richard and Roswell and Rick and Nicola.

“I’m also grateful to the Malta Drag Racing Association and the Malta Motorsport Federation for their support.”
