It may no longer top the pop charts in this day and age, but there’s no denying that the sound of the 1970s – distant as that time may seem – remains a major and very relevant influence on the music produced in the decades that followed.

Rock, electronica, dance music, punk – the 1970s played an essential part in the evolution of all of these genres and more. It is therefore hardly surprising that events reviving the spirit of the 1970s remain a popular attraction to this day, appealing to audiences of all ages.

It is in this very same spirit that the organisers behind What the Funk, now in its third edition, are gearing up to stage another night of live music inspired by the 1970s.

Focusing mainly, as the event’s name clearly implies, on the groovier side of the music spectrum, What the Funk 3 will feature a setlist culled from the very best hits of that era – a live celebration of phenomenally funky hits from legendary artists such as James Brown, Donna Summer, the Bee Gees, Stevie Wonder and Chic, as well as a few more modern numbers inspired by the original masters of funk and rhythm.

Featuring some of the best musical talent from the local scene, What the Funk 3 also offers a platform for these musicians and artists to perform popular hits in their own particular style while keeping the audience involved and dancing.

For this reason, the organisers are encouraging those attending to dress for the occasion and dig deep into their wardrobes for some appropriate retro fashion-wear – the funkier, the better.

The list of performers includes members of Tribali, Red Electrick, 26 Other Worlds, Big Band Brothers, Fakawi, Beige, Troffa Ħamra and Strummin’, as well as solo artists and musicians, among them Adrian Ir-Russu Brincat, Mario Borg, Simon Sammut, Charles Cassar, Jonathan Abela, Nadine Axisa, Glen Vella and Cheryl Camilleri.

DJs Joseph Axiak and Alex Grech will be spinning more funky music before and after the concert, while PJ Xerxen shall be hosting the show.

As with previous editions, What the Funk 3 is aimed at raising funds for Puttinu Cares, to support the organisation’s ongoing work in helping those people undergoing cancer treatment abroad.

The event will be held at Buskett Roadhouse on April 6. Tickets cost €10 each and are available from www.ticketline.com.mt. For more information, look up What the Funk 3 in aid of Puttinu Cares on Facebook.
