The Key IT Group has announced that its inaugural conference, Continuity and Security Insight – Malta 2013, will be held on May 31at the Corinthia San Ġorġ.

Business continuity and security are two disciplines that can either stand alone or go hand-in-hand as both have the potential to present themselves as solutions for the other. With experienced guest speakers from the UK, the conference promises to be a significant learning event for attendees.

Business continuity management is considered by some to be a comparatively new discipline despite becoming an International Standard in 2012 (ISO 22301). Even so, many enterprises have long since recognised that embracing BCM is essential and needs top down commitment.

Relevant to both public and private sectors, business continuity management is a holistic process which ISO 22301 refers to as, “the capability of an organisation to continue delivery of products or services at acceptable predefined levels following a disruptive incident”. History shows us that organisations that are unprepared to face serious disruption can find their very survival placed in jeopardy.

Contrary to popular belief, it is far more than being just an IT problem. Business continuity management provides the framework to assist in the identification of threats and defining an appropriate level of response and organisational resilience, thereby assisting organisations in preventing an incident becoming a disaster.

Security has often provided business continuity management with risk mitigation measures such as physical security, building entry control, premises monitoring, CCTV, and hostile vehicle mitigation. But with increased threats from cyberspace, there is a greater need for information security and protection of critical infrastructures.

This is accentuated by the recent Business Continuity Institute survey that reports 63 per cent of respondents expect to be cyber-attack targets in 2013.

The conference will look to inform and advise the delegates of the variety of threats, both ICT and non-ICT related, that demand serious consideration.
