Rangers ended the 2011-12 season in turmoil as the mighty Glasgow club were hit by a financial crisis, paving the way for Celtic to cruise to their 43rd league title.
After going into administration, Rangers were docked 10 points by the Scottish Premier League bosses.
The loss of points was a blow for the Gers as they dropped out of the running for the title.
The game’s followers described Rangers’ fall from glory as the biggest happening in recent sporting history. The club owe the taxman millions of pounds and it seems that the collapse of such a great footballing organisation came after decades of mismanagement.
As soon as Rangers’ woes were exposed, Celtic were immediately installed as favourites to win a domestic treble.
Yet, the 2012 Scottish Cup was won by Hearts, who crushed their Edinburgh rivals Hibernian 5-1 in the final, and League Cup was lifted by Kilmarnock who stunned Celtic 1-0.
A ‘newco’ Rangers have yet to discover in which division they will be playing next season.
For sure, they can’t participate in Europe, meaning that Celtic, who will be marking their 125th anniversary, and third-placed Motherwell will represent Scotland in the Champions League, starting from the third qualifying round.
Cup winners Hearts will contest the Europa League play-offs, fourth-placed Dundee United enter the competition from the third qualifying round and sixth-placed St Johnstone (who have inherited the spot vacated by fifth-placed Hearts) in the second qualifying round.
