In Turkey, on the outskirts of the old town of Smyrne, to where many Maltese used to emigrate a century or two ago, there is a thriving flea market with copy brand watches, made-in-China souvenirs and, I suppose, overnight experts and instant consultants.
They seem to have taken precautions against the Trade Descriptions Act. Never mind the quality, test the width. A friend once told me an expert is made up of two parts: ‘ex’, a has-been or an unknown quantity, and ‘spurt’, a drip under pressure.
We may be able to get even more consultants at a cheap rate for the greater glory of our country. Experts or expatriates make no difference. As the Italians say, tutto fa brodo, and a local politician once famously said: “For our great deeds we will be remembered by our posteriors.”
