The General Workers’ Union is considering taking legal action against the Żurrieq mayor who is not allowing some hawkers to set up their stalls on Thursday because of the village feast.

In a statement issued yesterday, the union said some of its members had been informed through a letter that they would not be able to set up due to activities connected with the feast of St Catherine this weekend.

This letter was not sent to all hawkers but to some who set up their stalls in a specific area.

The union deplored the decision, taken by the mayor without consulting the hawkers or their union representatives, it said. As a result, some hawkers would be losing business. The union said it was considering taking legal action to safeguard the rights of its members.

When contacted yesterday evening mayor Silvio Izzi Savona preferred not to comment saying he did not have the necessary documents in hand and did not want to jeopardise the legal stand of the council.
