Melita returned to winning ways in the FXDD Premier Division after seeing off Birżebbuġa 7-4 to consolidate their mid-table position in the standings.

This was a balanced match but, in the end, Melita proved to be the better side.

They played a possession game with the experienced Edwin Gauci an inspiration for Melita.

He marshalled his team’s defence and also ventured forward, particularly on the right wing, when Melita attacked.

Gauci was twice on the mark for the St Julian’s side with the other goals coming from Michael Martin (three) and a goal each for David Eminyan and Daniel Gravino.

James Galea, Wayne Vella, Jovin Abela and Mark Psaila scored the goals for the south seasiders.

In the First Division, leaders Qrendi continued to impress after beating third-placed Żebbuġ Rangers 6-2 to move three points clear of Gżira United.

The two promotion contenders came into this match with high expectations. Qrendi opened a three-goal lead from Alan Spiteri (two) and Antonello Brincat.

Rangers, however, pulled one back through Ġorġ Borg before half-time.

Qrendi continued to exert pressure on their opponents’ rearguard and goals from Brincat and Kevin Vella made the score 5-1 before Borg scored his second of the day for Rangers.

Qrendi had the last laugh when Spiteri completed his hat-trick for a pronounced victory.

This was Qrendi’s eighth win of the campaign and they are the only side still to concede a defeat in the First Division this season.

Gżira kept the pace with Qrendi after defeating Marsaskala 6-1.

Kenneth Bonnici, Charlo Debattista and two goals from Alessio Restuccia put the Maroons 4-0 up. John Paul Barbara reduced the arrears for Marsaskala from a penalty before the break.

Marsaskala tried to stage a reaction in the second half with Barbara going close on various occasions to beat Gżira keeper Neil Camilleri who produced a string of fine saves.

Goals from Restuccia and Aurelio Burgio then sealed the win for Gżira.
