Former Olympic champion Justin Gatlin, rebuilding a career shamed by a four-year doping ban, edged Britain’s Dwain Chambers in the 100m at the Madrid meeting.

US sprinter Gatlin clocked 10.10sec to beat Chambers (10.13sec) with America’s Travis Padgett (10.18sec) claiming third place.

Gatlin was suspended for four years after testing positive for testosterone just three months after equalling the world 100m record in 2006.

Ironically, Chambers also served a doping ban, in his case for two years in 2003.

Elsewhere on Saturday, Jamaica’s Schillonie Calvert won the women’s 100m in 11.23sec ahead of American pair Barbara Pierre (11.28) and Tianna Madison (11.30).

In the men’s 400m, Belgium’s Kevin Borlee took victory in 44.74sec, the best European time of the season, ahead of Cuba’s William Collazo (44.95).

America’s Tyler Mulder won the 800m in a time of 1min 45.10sec ahead of Russia’s Youri Borzakovsky (1:45.57), the 2004 Olympic champion, and Spain’s Manuel Olmedo (1:45.67).

Americans swept the men’s 110m hurdles with Tyrone Akins (13.45) leading home Joel Brown (13.49) and Jeff Porter (13.53).

Women’s European 1,500m champion Nuria Fernandez of Spain won her event in 4min 06.00sec, ahead of Yekaterina Martynova of Russia (4:06.27).

Spain’s Sergio Sanchez, the world championship silver medallist, took the 3,000m in a time of 7min 49.45sec with Yusuf Biwott of Kenya in second place (7:49.80).
