A man who lives in a Marsaxlokk garage was yesterday remanded in custody after pleading not guilty to forging and cashing stolen cheques.

Giuseppe Cassar, 55, denied using a woman’s stolen chequebook, forging her signature and cashing the stolen cheques between January 1 and January 21.

Appearing before Magistrate Miriam Hayman, the accused, who said he depended on social benefits, was also charged with committing a crime when under a probation order and breaching the conditions of bail granted in July last year.

In the earlier case, Mr Cassar was granted bail against a deposit of €2,500 and a €10,000 personal guarantee.

Mr Cassar pleaded not guilty and did not ask for bail.

Police Inspectors Rennie Stivala and Robert Said Sarreo prosecuted.

Lawyers Michael and Lucio Sciriha appeared for the defence.
