Labour MP Silvio Schembri has been appointed chairman of the Responsible Gaming Foundation.

The foundation is an independent institution set up earlier this year with the aim of helping, educating and preventing problems related to gambling.

Competitiveness Parliamentary Secretary Josè Herrera thanked Mr Schembri for accepting the responsibility on a voluntary basis.

Lotteries and Gaming Authority chairman Joseph Cuschieri said a percentage of the proceeds collected from licensees would be transferred to the foundation to finance responsible gaming initiatives.

The foundation will be funded through contributions by the national lotteries operator Maltco, EU assistance and money made available by the Lotteries and Gaming Authority.
