The National Sports Council has returned to the Lands Property Division a parcel of land near Qawra that had been earmarked for a sport centre.

Speaking during the adjournment, Opposition MP Ċensu Galea said this sounded the death knell for the proposed sports complex, even if Minister Evarist Bartolo had confirmed that the Government had not abandoned this plan.

Mr Galea said the minister failed to answer a number of other questions which he had put, asking whether the Government had consulted the St Paul’s Bay local council before taking this step.

The lack of reaction from the local council was also a source of concern, said Mr Galea, particularly when one noted the complex social situation in Qawra.

He called for a collegial approach to tackling the social problems in the area, not least through the promotion of sports activities.

The decision to postpone the building of the complex indefinitely was wrong and he urged the Government to reconsider.
