The gale force winds which roared through the islands these past two days should subside today, although temperatures are expected to drop to 7°C in the evening.

Despite the strong winds, there were no reports of damage, a spokesman for the Civil Protection Department said.

The very strong winds rattled windows and hail pummelled the islands, though not with the devastating effect it had for many cars when it had blanketed Malta in January.

The decrease in intensity did not stop people from taking to the social media to complain about the unexpected cold, while praying for a kinder and milder weekend.

And it seems the winds might just comply. According to a spokesman for the Malta International Airport Meteorological Office, the wind force will drop to moderate over the weekend. Today might still see showers and hail though.

The maximum temperature today will reach 15°C and drop to 9°C in the evening.

Tomorrow might still see people reaching for a blanket and a steaming cup of tea as temperatures are expected to plunge to 7°C.

The wind will be light and increase in force to moderate throughout the day, becoming strong. The sea is expected to be very rough, becoming moderate to rough.

The cause of the bad weather was attributed to a low pressure area which developed over the Balkans and the Tyrrhenian Sea, which brought about clouds and thunderstorms. The freezing level was low, consequently, when it rained, the ice did not melt and hail pummelled the islands.

The low pressure area is now moving south eastwards and its intensity will be rising.
