The clash of the two mid-table sides in the women’s top division, played recently at the Sannat Ground, saw ‘hosts’ Gozo FC emerge clear winners over Pembroke Athleta.

Joselene Gafa was the Gozitans’ heroine as she scored five goals in a 6-0 win with the other scorer for the winners being Tracey Theuma.

This was the only match from Division One last week.

The result at half-time was 3-0 but that advantage could have been wider had it not been for the fine saves of young Pembroke keeper Nicole Mifsud.

Pembroke’s task became even more difficult when captain Justine Zammit and Mifsud pulled injured during the half-time break, leaving their team-mates with a mountain to climb.

Gozo went on to add three more goals as Pembroke shifted their pack thoroughly with some players even deployed out of position for the rest of the match.

Pembroke Athleta coach Rikky Pace admitted this was an outing to forget.

“Gozo were the better team on the day and we created little,” he said.

“We had so many injury problems to deal with before kick-off and with another two players unavailable at half-time, the game became too complicated. Now, it’s back to the drawing board.”

Victory was Gozo’s seventh in the championship.

“This result fills us with confi-dence,” Gozo player Felicienne Mercieca said.

“With no disrespect to our opponents, it was clear we were the better team for most of the match.”

Division Two

On Wednesday, Melita beat Naxxar 3-0 in a Division Two basement clash at the Luxol Ground.

Melita were in a class of their own and opened the score early on through Alysa Cachia before Marie Claire Alamango made it 2-0 just before half-time.

The second period saw Melita press for more goals but found Karen Camilleri in their way.

The Naxxar goalkeeper effected a series of fine saves but could do nothing to prevent Nicole Micallef making it 3-0 midway through the half.
