The General Workers’ Union has warned workers not to be fooled like they were before the 2008 election, when job guarantees turned out to be worthless.

We will be vigilant to ensure workers are not deceived again

In a declaration yesterday, the union said it would be vigilant to ensure that a new government would deliver its pre-electoral promises.

The GWU said it was making the declaration because pledges the Nationalist Party made in 2008 were not implemented.

“The GWU will not accept a repeat of what happened before the last election when various categories of workers were given assurances that their jobs would be safe only for the opposite to happen after the election, with the consequence that many of these workers not only found no peace of mind but even lost their jobs,” it said.

The union mentioned letters sent to employees at Air Malta, the Shipyards, Go and the public transport system.

It said the workers had received personalised letters from “the head of the Nationalist Party who promised them that their jobs would be safe”.

“We will be vigilant so that the promises made are kept and to ensure workers are not deceived again,” it said.

The union said workers, pensioners, youngsters and families must perform their civic duty and vote “in their best interests and that of the country”.
