The General Workers’ Union has called for harsher punishments in cases of assault on local wardens who had just been doing their job.

Jail terms should also be considered as a deterrent for this type of crime, it said yesterday.

On Tuesday Christian Mangion, 30, punched warden Luiga Borda after she fined his brother for using his mobile phone while driving in Floriana. He pleaded guilty and was given a two-year jail term, suspended for four years.

The union strongly condemned the assault and called on the public to cooperate with local wardens when they were doing their duty.
