Air Malta employees, who remain in the dark about their future in the beleaguered company, have two more days to go before a meeting with the company’s management where they are expected to be briefed on the situation.

Anticipating Friday’s meeting and in view of the public statements about Air Malta, the General Workers’ Union yesterday organised a meeting for its own members.

The meeting was closed to the media and GWU general secretary Tony Zarb would not comment afterwards, insisting the union would be calling a press conference today to give its views on the situation.

Air Malta is to undergo a massive restructuring exercise to remain viable after the government injected €52 million in cash to keep the airline afloat last year.

The cash injection was accepted by Brussels on condition the airline undergoes restructuring and some 600 employees are expected to lose their job.

A restructuring plan has been submitted to the EU Commission but the government has insisted the process will start even before Brussels delivers its opinion.
