The General Workers’ Union and the Forum Unions Maltin have pledged to boost cooperation “in workers’ best interests”.

The two organisations met last week to discuss improving relations and strengthening cooperation on the issues they agreed on.

Their general secretaries, Tony Zarb and Paul Pace, said relations had gone from strength to strength, adding that workers would ultimately benefit from cooperation between the two.

They agreed to hold joint national conferences on issues such as precarious work.

Forum president John Bencini said his confederation would be holding its triennial conference next month and was planning to invite the GWU and the Confederation of Maltese Trade Unions to address its members.

“We truly believe in genuine cooperation between all Maltese unions. At the end of the day, workers stand to gain,” he said, thanking the GWU for backing Forum to join the European Trade Union Confederation and in its fight to join the Malta Council for Economic and Social Development.

“We have no hurry to be given a seat but we are sure one day we will,” he said.
