The General Workers Union has called off industrial action at the open centres for asylum seekers after the number of security officers present was increased.

Last week, the union ordered workers at open centres to call the police and walk out en masse at the first sign of intimidation.

This followed numerous incidents in which some workers were threatened and even physically assaulted.

Most of the incidents took place at Dar is-Sliem in Santa Venera and Dar il-Liedna in Fgura, two open centres dedicated to housing minors.
