Transfer deadline day in Maltese football produced the usual flurry of last-minute deals.

Gżira United’s intensive recruitment drive continued yesterday as they completed the signing of Brazilian Liliu.

The former Birkirkara forward, who last played in Cyprus, landed in Malta on Tuesday and his registration paperwork was finalised in time following the receipt of his international transfer certificate.

Branko Nisevic, the Gżira coach, also signed young Hibs midfielder Zach Scerri on loan.

Sliema Wanderers snapped up young striker Ryan Spiteri from Ħamrun Spartans. Spiteri has signed a five-year deal.

The Blues, who have lost their opening two Premier League games, have also agreed a deal with Mosta to take Nigerian defender Benjamin Chinedu Oweregbulam on loan till the end of the season.

Oweregbulam endured a torrid introduction to Maltese football as he was sent off 12 minutes into his Mosta debut in the 1-0 defeat to Valletta last Friday. He received a two-match ban yesterday.

Ħamrun Spartans, who have picked up four points from their opening two league games, recruited Italian midfielder Massimiliano Giusti on loan from Vicenza.

Tarxien Rainbows were engaged in efforts to tie up a loan deal for Birkirkara defender Emerson Marcelina but, at the time of writing, discussions were still on-going.

Also yesterday, Birkirkara loaned out Chilean midfielder Edison Bilbao Zarate to Gozitan champions Għajnsielem.

The activity was not restricted to incoming transfers as Mosta informed the Malta FA they had released Spanish wing-back Manuel Enmy Beltre.
