Leaders Għajnsielem continued with their march at the top of the standings after chalking up their 12th win of the season when beating Oratory Youths as second-placed Xewkija Tigers had the better of St Lawrence Spurs to keep their hopes alive.

With four matches left for the end of the season, the Blacks continue to hold a six-point lead at the top of the standings.

Last weekend, they had the better of Oratory 2-0 with a goal scored in each half.

At first, Għajnsielem struggled to impose their play as the Youths were well organised in defence and also troubled their opponents with quick counter-breaks.

However, two minutes from half-time the Blacks opened the score from a penalty, awarded for a foul by Sam Frank Bajada on Jean Pierre Mifsud Triganza. Joseph Vella made no mistake from the spot.

Oratory tried to stage a reaction after the break but an attempt by Bajada failed to reach the target and so did an effort by Anderson Ribeiro.

Then, on 55 minutes, Għajnsielem were awarded a second penalty for a handling infringement by Manwel Gauci. However, Dhonatan Santos Da Hora saw his spot-kick saved by goalkeeper Mark Grima.

Għajnsielem held command of play despite the penalty setback and they went on to seal victory with a second goal scored by Mifsud Triganza.

Xewkija beat lowly St Lawrence 4-0 but they could have scored more goals had they been more clinical in attack.

Daniel Bogdanovic and Rodney Buttigieg saw their efforts stopped by the woodwork and a Dene Shields ‘goal’ was disallowed for offside.

But the Tigers soon opened a two-goal lead.

On 43 minutes, Chris Camilleri pounced on a loose ball and netted from close distance. Thiago Melo Dos Santos then doubled the score with a low drive at the far post.

The first half drama was no over yet though as St Lawrence were reduced to ten players when Joseph Mario Vella got sent off for dissent.

There was only one team in it after the half-time interval as the Tigers scored two more goals, through substitute John Camilleri (76) and Bogdanovic (83), to round up a very comfortable victory.

Xagħra struggle for victory

Division One leaders Xagħra United were made to work harder than expected to beat Munxar Falcons 2-1.

An early goal by Paul Said put Munxar in front as Xagħra could have drawn level but Marlon Mamo shot his penalty wide on 19 minutes.

The Blues were made to wait until the 64th minute to equalise following an Oliver Farrugia goal but then they had goalkeeper Steve Sultana sent off for a foul.

Despite the numerical handicap, Xagħra still managed to clinch maximum points with a Joseph Buhagiar winner.

Nadur Youngsters beat Sannat Lions 2-1 in a clash for second place.

Brandon Said opened the score for Nadur just before half-time but Sannat levelled from a Josiah Buttigieg free-kick on 55 minutes.

Victory could have gone either way but in the end it was Nadur who scored the winner through Saviour Attard.

Għarb Rangers registered a 6-1 win over Qala Saints.

Qala opened the score first with an Oleg Pogukay goal but Rangers turned the result in favour with three goals before half-time through Frank Attard (39), Paul Anthony Attard (40) and Josef Camenzuli (45).

Għarb dominated during the second period and scored three other goals – Sylvan Galea (59, 70) and Renzo Vella (62).

On 79 minutes, the referee awarded Għarb a penalty and red carded Qala substitute Andrew Borg. However, Galea’s shot from the spot was saved by keeper Franco Buttigieg.
