The latest issue of Perry real estate magazine, out with The Sunday Times tomorrow, will feature a painting in oil on paper of Għajnsielem, painted in circa 1968 by Henry Mayo Bateman.

Bateman (1887-1970) was born in New South Wales, Australia, but found himself in England soon after his birth, where he remained for the major part of his life.

He started drawing from a very young age. He eventually became a household name as a cartoonist and was little known as a painter.

In the mid-1960s, Bateman discovered the Maltese islands and instantly fell in love with the ideal climate and unspoilt charm.

He eventually settled in Gozo, where he spent the last five years of his life painting incessantly and constantly struggling modestly to master the art of colour, light and different painting techniques.

Bateman simply painted what he saw – Gozitan seascapes, country lanes, churches and landscapes – all of which reveal the true feelings of an artist who fell in love with the serenity of a tranquil Mediterranean island where he felt at home.

Besides adorning the outer cover of the magazine, this work of art will also be on exhibition to the general public at the offices of Perry Limited in Tower Road, Sliema.

Perry is designed by Mediamaker Limited and printed by Progress Press, both members of the Allied Group of Companies.
