Quite a few days ago I chanced to hear Alfred Mifsud on One TV drawing a parallel between the Labour Party’s possible return to government, and the new energy and unifyingly popular dignity which Dr George Abela brought to the Presidency.

While the equation seems to me rather gratuitous, Dr Abela’s merits are there for all to appreciate. The Prime Minister consolidated his belief in the man by appointing him President of Malta. Regrettably, that same belief in Dr Abela’s seriousness and maturity had not been shared by the majority of PL delegates in the party leadership race.

It is never too late for Labour’s appreciation of a born leader. Any futile attempts at basking in reflected glory, however, are too pathetic to be credible. Intelligent Maltese voters are not Orwellian sheep.
