Alegria Dance Company together with Tikka Banda will be presenting Tikka Alegria, an experimental performance fusing flamenco with traditional Maltese band marches.

Tikka Banda, founded by musician Justin Formosa and some friends in 2013 is, as its name implies, a band with a rather small formation. It is made up of traditional Maltese elements which are normally found in band marches.

Tikka Banda’s objective is to keep the Maltese festa alive throughout the year by offering different presentations of music. In the past months, the band continued to evolve and with the participation of 10 musicians and four choreographers, it is succeeding in displaying Maltese and international music in a contemporary and interactive spectacle.

Alegria Dance Company is Malta’s only professional dance company specialising in flamenco dance. Established since 2009 under the direction of Ingrid Sciberras, Alegria has performed locally and overseas in art festivals, theatre productions and charity events besides private functions. The company has recently been working on some experimental work fusing the gypsy art form with various traditional Maltese folk music and traditions.

In Tikka Alegria, Alegria will accompany the musicians of Tikka Banda as they perform some traditional band marches and   transform the university quadrangle into   a local village feast. Choreography will be by Estelle Bonello Sant.

The performance forms part of the university’s annual festival Evenings on Campus, one of the very first festivals in Malta which started to give space to different forms of contemporary culture through its representations of visual and performing arts.

Tikka Alegria will be held tomorrow at 9pm in Atriju Vassalli (main quadrangle), University of Malta Msida Campus. For more information, visit the Evenings on Campus Facebook page, send an e-mail to eveningsoncampus@um.edu.mt or call on 7984 3480. Tickets are also available at the door.
