Funds will be allocated for the crossing over the Mrieħel bypass in the next Budget towards the end of the year, according to the Transport Ministry.

Transport Minister Joe Mizzi said on Tuesday the Government was revisiting plans for a pedestrian bridge across the bypass.

“The Government is still evaluating all options available and studying which is the most feasible one: either a footbridge or an underpass for the Mrieħel bypass,” the spokesman said.

The time frames would depend on the final decision but the Government “is treating the matter urgently”.

In 2010, Nationalist MPs had voted against a motion by Labour MPs from the district to construct a footbridge or underpass.

The issue gained notoriety when two teenage girls died in 2005 when they were run over while crossing the bypass to reach their homes. On various occasions, the Government had pledged to build a footbridge but plans had been scrapped.

During the election campaign, Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said a footbridge would cost almost €400,000 but he insisted that studies would have to be done to assess the best option.

When the road was built about 20 years ago, the Tal-Blata housing estate was divided in two and residents on the industrial estate side were cut off from the locality’s centre.
