Ford of Europe has begun production of the new Focus ECOnetic Technology, its most fuel-efficient Focus ever, at its Saarlouis, Germany, assembly plant.

The Focus ECOnetic Technology is powered by a specially-calibrated 1.6-litre Duratorq TDCi engine that delivers 3.4 l/100 km (83.1 mpg); offering a potential range of more than 1,500 km from a single tank of fuel. It also delivers CO2 emissions of 88 g/km.

The Focus ECOnetic Technology achieves benefits from improved aerodynamics, with specially-fitted undershields and its lowered suspension reducing drag. The engine provides more accurate control of the charge air temperature, through a cooler, denser charge of the combustion chamber, by using a water-cooled charge air cooler instead of the standard air-to-air system.

Half of all Ford cars sold in Europe towards the end of this year will carry the ECOnetic Technology badge – increasing to two-thirds in 2013, showing they are leaders or among the very best in terms of fuel economy in their segment. This is part of Ford’s commitment to reduce CO2 emissions of its cars by 30 per cent between 2006 and 2020.
