From musical recipes to fruit-shaped pieces of music, Barumbara promises to be a recital like no other.

As part of the run-up to the Carnival season, a group of musicians have decided to come together and present a tongue-in-cheek recital that will delight young and old alike.

Two pianists and composers, Véronique Vella and Alexander Vella Gregory, have teamed up with soprano Dorothy Baldacchino, mezzo AlexandraScicluna and bass Albert Buttigieg. Together they will present a lively concert.

The recital features works by Satie, Bernstein and other composers, including two new premieres by Vella and Vella Gregory.

Some of the highlights include Satie’s Three Pieces In The Shape Of A Pear, and Bernstein’s La Bonne Cuisine.

Vella will also premiere her set of three songs entitled Strange Pets based on the humorous poems by John Hegley, while Vella Gregory will premiere his Kantata Maltija, based on conversations overheard in Valletta.

The recital will also feature the first performance of a new discovery called Ode To Pigeons which has been attributed to Handel.

Of course, many musicologists have cast doubt on the authenticity of this piece, but since it is Carnival one will give the benefit of the doubt.

The recital will be held in the Music Room at St James Cavalier, Valletta on Saturday and next Sunday at 7.30 p.m. Tickets cost €8 (€5 concessions). For bookings and to buy tickets phone 2122 3200 ore-mail bookings@sjcav.org. Alternatively, log on to www.sjcav.org to buy tickets online.
