I refer to the letter Public Buses Then And Now by Ron Johnston (November 5) and would strongly recommend that the public transport system should adopt the procedure of buying tickets before boarding, same as in so many other countries, and not on board the buses as at present. During rush hour, a least half the transit time is spent waiting for all passengers to pay their fares on boarding the bus and receive the correct change, etc. It would make more sense if all tickets were bought beforehand at automatic ticket machines, newsagents, grocers, etc. and the practice stopped altogether. A lesser alternative would be to slap on a hefty €2 fare for anybody purchasing the ticket on boarding the bus.
