While covering the Labour Party deputy leader election, this newspaper also took comments of the two final contestants. What intrigued me most was the comment by Owen Bonnici to the question on the fact the party was having another election for deputy leader in such a short time.
Bonnici’s glib reply was that Konrad Mizzi had shouldered his responsibility and resigned from deputy leader, thereby necessitating a fresh election. Well, glib the reply may have been, no doubt Bonnici thinking what a clever person he is.
However, what his reply amply proved was that Mizzi may have shouldered his responsibility towards Labour but he very miserably did not shoulder his responsibility towards the nation by also resigning from minister.
Nor did prime Minister Joseph Muscat shoulder his by sacking him. Not such a clever reply, after all.
