A Frenchman was conditionally discharged after being apprehended at the airport for smashing the door of his rented flat following a heated argument with his girlfriend.

Karl Henrick Huillier, a 26-year-old soldier from France, pleaded guilty to causing voluntary damage to property which did not belong to him and breaching the peace.

When the police was alerted, he was not at the Msida apartment he rented. He was subsequently apprehended at the departures lounge of Malta International Airport on Friday evening.

He paid €450 to cover the damage to the door and was conditionally discharged for three years.

Lawyer Chris Chircop appeared for Mr Huillier. Inspector Jason Sultana prosecuted.
