While I was very pleased with all that was done to commemorate the 35th anniversary of Freedom Day, I sorely missed the fact that no mention was made of the noble idea of the then Minister for Culture Agatha Barbara. All school children had received a medal which marked the event.
This medal displayed on its head the monument at Vittoriosa and on the reverse showed a rifle, broken in two, overlying the map of Malta to represent Malta breaking off with its historical tradition with wars. The medal was the artistic work of Noel Galea Bason, working as engraving designer at the then Malta Mint. These medals were distributed to all schools on March 29, 1979. I write this for record purposes.
