Over the last few weeks our locality, which includes a number of senior citizens’ homes and hospitals, has been subjected to obscene fireworks barrages taking place the whole night – even after midnight.
The severity of the noise pollution reached a level far in excess of that by the Luftwaffe onslaughts on the Ta’ Qali airfields during World War II.
The ear-splitting explosions were let off frequently in multiples of five purportedly and obviously in honour of the parish saint resting peacefully and blissfully far away in heaven.
All this was a great inconvenience to the mostly uninterested citizens of all ages whose only interest lay in enjoying a usual good night’s sleep which is theirs as of right and which no one has a right to interrupt. This hellish bedlam has obviously taken place without a finger being lifted in disagreement by the civil or ecclesiastic authorities who, for reasons best known to themselves, appear inclined to turn a blind eye to this state of affairs.
