Prof. Mario Buhagiar, Department of History of Art, University of Malta, writes:

Frederick Valentino and Cecil Paris passed away within 24 hours of each other last week. Their chief common denominator was their human warmth and endearing personality, which earned them love and respect. They shared an interest in culture and artistic heritage and were both erudite and knowledgeable in their respective professions and fields of interest.

Frederick was an established architect with a long and esteemed professional career but he also had a passionate and knowledgeable interest in botany, and in particular, medicinal herbs. One of my fondest memories is his explanation of virtues of the herbal medicine on sale at the abbey of Monte Cassino, which I had the privilege of visiting with him.

Cecil was, on the other hand, a much loved and esteemed general practitioner whose dedication to patients under his care went beyond the call of duty. Sliema, which he loved and which loved and honored him as one of its most cherished residents, will greatly miss him. The void he leaves behind is hard to fill. His patients included the late Grand Master Fra Andrew Bertie, whom he visited in his Attard residence and whose funeral in the Order’s priory on the Aventino, Rome, left a deep impression on him, which he shared with me.

Frederick and Cecil became well acquainted on the study tour that as head of History of Art at the University of Malta I introduced in the course curriculum as an annual study unit. I have nostalgic memories of the way, in spite of the age difference, that they integrated with the students and followed the rigorous onsite lectures.

Cecil’s joie de vivre made him an instant favourite. Frederick was more reserved but equally popular. I will miss both of them greatly. I cherish their memory as I mourn them.
