The next music appreciation evening being organised by the German-Maltese Circle Classical Music Group will be devoted mainly to Schubert’s Symphony No. 9 in C Major (The Great).

A DVD recording of the symphony, performed by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Karl Böhm, at the Grosser Musikvereinsaal in Vienna in 1973, will be introduced by Aldo Fenech.

This symphony was discovered by the composer Robert Schumann in a pile of papers stowed away in the home of the composer’s brother, Ferdinand, on New Year’s Day in 1839. And it was Felix Mendelssohn who conducted its first performance in Leipzig just under three months later.

Rightly considered Schubert’s most perfect symphony, the Ninth was completed in 1825.

The evening will be held on Friday at 6.30 p.m. at Messina Palace, the German-Maltese Circle’s premises, at 141, St Christopher Street, Valletta. It will also feature the last two movements of Schumann’s Fourth Symphony, which could not be played during last month’s music appreciation evening because of a power cut.

The public is invited to attend. Those wishing to be put on the group’s mailing list are asked to submit their e-mail address.

The group aims to promote greater appreciation of music by German and Austrian composers.
