August 29-30, 2011, Budgetary Management and Financial Control – Obligations for EU Funded Projects, Berlin.

Beneficiaries have to manage budgetary regulations of their projects. This workload is more time consuming than the application for EU funding. In case of not following these financial rules, the European Commission or national authorities can decide on freezing the grants or demanding reimbursements. Eligibility and public procurement rules have to be followed and strict deadlines have to be met.

For this reason, this practical European seminar will focus on financial management’s duties and requirements once a project has been granted funding by the EU Structural Funds. Moreover, experts will give guidance on potentially arising questions and specially designed exchange rounds helps to identify available resources to successfully conduct EU funded projects.

In 2011, the European Commission s adopted a Green Paper on The EU Corporate Governance Framework. The European Economic and Social Committee is therefore invited to submit its views on the suggestions set out in this Green Paper so that the Commission could take a decision on the next steps.

The aim of this public hearing is to focus on better management of the board of directors, the appropriate engagement of shareholders, as well as the application of the “comply or explain” approach which underpins the EU corporate governance framework.

Moreover, this initiative seeks to involve civil society in the debate as well as to present the viewpoints of different stakeholders on that issue. These contributions will serve as a basis for the discussion in the study group and will be reflected in the EESC opinion.

September 16, 2011, A Single Market for a Social Europe; Stockholm.

A seminar will take place to discuss how in the last half-century, Europe has undergone very significant economic integration. Borders have opened and, in many respects, a European single market is already a reality. The free movement of people, however, is lagging behind, thus demonstrating the need for more in-depth debate on the European Union’s social dimension.

Can the EU help strengthen social values in a situation where many European countries face high unemployment, austerity measures and social exclusion in the wake of the financial crisis? Should the European Union be given a stronger social profile that has a more tangible impact on European citizens’ daily lives and thus on their attitude to the European venture? These are some of the questions we want to look at during this seminar, with the focus on the Swedish view on the issues raised.

The seminar will be moderated by Jan Olsson. Interpretation will be provided from and into Swedish and English.
