A 52-year former policeman was handed down a six-month sentence suspended for a year after resisting the police when they followed up on a report that he was carrying a weapon.

Emanuel Savona, of Birżebbuġa, was also found guilty of driving without licence and insurance cover. He was fined €1,200 and had his licence suspended for a year.

On Monday, Mr Savona went to his former partner’s residence in Marsascala reportedly carrying a weapon with which he intended to assault the woman.

The accused was drunk and when the police arrived on site to check on the report he attacked and insulted the officers, who had to restrain and handcuff him. A policeman suffered minor injuries.

Inspector Jesmond Borg said Mr Savona apologised to the police, who described him as courteous.

Magistrate Gabriella Vella presided over the case. Lawyer Patrick Valentino appeared for the accused.
