Former Civil Protection Department director Peter Cordina has confirmed that his name will be on the Labour Party’s list of MEP candidates. “The official list is still not out, so I will give my comment at a later stage,” he said.

Other new candidates expected to stand on the PL ticket are MP Joe Sammut and Marlene Farrugia, former Labour leader Alfred Sant, former Sliema councillor Cyrus Engerer, and possibly, lawyer Ramona Frendo.

MEP Marlene Mizzi is expected to stand again though new MEP Claudette Abela Baldacchino is unlikely to contest again unless she is cleared of the pending fraud charges against her by then.

MEP Joe Cuschieri is also likely to re-contest but sources said his colleague John Attard Montalto will call it a day.

The Sunday Times of Malta has learnt that the list of PL candidates for the May 2014 elections will be unveiled next week.

Meanwhile, the Nationalist Party recently approved eight MEP candidates: Playmobil’s former CEO Helga Ellul; current MEPs Roberta Metsola and David Casa; Chamber of Commerce official Stefano Mallia; human rights lawyer Therese Comodini Cachia; entrepreneur Jonathan Shaw; Gozitan lawyer Kevin Cutajar; and the president of PN’s youth section Kevin Plumpton.

Last month, PN leader Simon Busuttil said the party was looking to approving 10 MEP candidates so at least two more names are expected to be added at a later stage.
