I refer to Louis Parnis’ letter Paving The Way (March 28).

The maintenance of footways and footpaths in non-arterial roads is the statutory responsibility of local councils according to section 33 (a) of Chapter 363 of the laws of Malta, the Local Councils Act.

Part of the central Government’s annual financial allocation to local councils is specifically for footways’ and footpaths’ maintenance.

Any complaints regarding bad surfaces of footways and footpaths in roads falling under local councils’ responsibility should be addressed to the respective local council and copied to the Department for Local Government on info.dlg@gov.mt.

The department follows up the complaints to ensure they are given full and timely attention by the local council.

It should also be noted that section 81 of the Local Councils Act authorises the central Government’s intervention at the expense of the local council if the latter fails to deliver on any statutory devolved function.
