Part-time footballers are going to be expected to declare their income – with pressure being put by the Malta Football Association on clubs.

The Finance Minister handed the sport a red card, saying that having their pay fall into the black economy provided fertile ground for corruption. They will be paying a reduced rate of 7.5 per cent, the goal being to ensure compliance and attract players to professional football.

The rate will be extended to other sports in the future to ensure a level playing field.
